At Hartlebury Church of England (VC) Primary School we recognise the challenges that families face in bringing up children. Everyone needs help at some time in their lives and therefore an ethos of early help is important for any school. There may be times when you need extra help and support. If this is the case please come and talk to us.

There are many ways in which we can help as outlined in our offer of early help. We can also help to plan specific support for families in the forms of Early Help Assessment where we can work together to set and achieve outcomes. Staff are aware of our schools offer of early help. Staff consider if there are any offers of early help that we can make in order to help a child thrive.

Early Help means providing support as soon as a problem appears, to stop it from getting worse. This could be at any point in a child’s life, from birth to the teenage years. Worcestershire Children First is responsible for the delivery of services to children and young people across Worcestershire.

Worcestershire Children First Early Help Family Support

Worcestershire Children First  has reviewed the arrangements of our Early Intervention Family Support (EIFS) and Targeted Family Support provision. An outcome for a more seamless, effective, and consistent provision county wide is to bring the 2 teams together to form:

“WCF Early Help, Family Support” Service

This new service replaces the current Targeted Family Support (TFS) and Early Intervention Family Support (EIFS) Teams as of the 12th April 2021. The TFS and EIFS services remain the same during this interim period and continue to accept requests for family support.

Parents, carers and young people who are aged 13 years or over will be able to self-refer to their local team directly.

Mentally Healthy Schools resources to help schools rebuild and recover

Mentally Healthy Schools has created a set of practical resources to help make the transition back to school easier for everyone, and help the whole school community rebuild and recover.

The resources are designed to be social distancing-friendly and are suitable for all. They contain lesson plans for teachers, advice and guidance for parents, and simple activities for children to complete in class or at home.

‘Now we’re Talking’ Mental Health Campaign

Herefordshire and Worcestershire’s Mental Health Campaign ‘Now We’re Talking’ is encouraging the local community to get arty to help improve their wellbeing.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust is the counties main provider of mental health services.

It runs the Now We’re Talking campaign which aims to raise awareness of Healthy Minds, a service which you can contact yourself if you are struggling with difficulties such as stress, anxiety, low mood or depression, it also aims to reduce the stigma that sadly still surrounds mental health.

Bringing together art, exercise and mental health for Mental Health Awareness Week in May, ‘Now We’re Talking with Art’ aims to highlight ways to maintain wellbeing, self-help and signpost to additional support if it’s needed.

The Trust is teaming up with Worcester City Council and a host of local partners and businesses to encourage residents to get arty to support their mental health and wellbeing, with easily accessible art based mental health resources, including mindfulness colouring sheets, live art classes and an Art trail around the City centre.

Local artists will fill the city with colour and promote a positive outlook on mental health, using the national theme of Mental Health Awareness Week ‘Nature and the environment’ the installations of fine art, photography, craft, murals and more, in windows and outdoor spaces the Art trail accompanied by an all-important map will provide information on where to get support for your mental health.

BUT, this is where you can get involved! Have a go at our mindfulness colouring sheets and send them in to us for a chance to have it displayed in the outdoor art trails being held across the county!

The trail aims to provide a colourful, inspiring and safe journey around the city, free of charge to promote a healthier, well connected and more resilient community.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD’S FEELINGS is a brand NEW ‘taster’ course from the Solihull Approach. It is an opportunity to try out a shorter online course. This is to support the Mental Health of parents and the Mental Health and well-being of children and young people.

Public Health England launches new Every Mind Matters campaign

Most families have experienced upheaval in their daily lives during the pandemic. With children and young people now back at school or college, the new Public Health England (PHE) Better Health – Every Mind Matters campaign provides NHS-endorsed tips and advice to help children and young people’s mental wellbeing, and equip parents and carers with the knowledge to support them.

The new advice available on the Every Mind Matters website has been developed in partnership with leading children and young people’s mental health charities, including Young MindsThe MixPlace2Be and The Anna Freud Centre.

It is designed to help parents and carers spot the signs that children may be struggling with their mental health and support them, and also provides advice that can help maintain good mental wellbeing. The site also provides tools to help young people build resilience and equips them to look after their mental wellbeing.

The new Better Health – Every Mind Matters campaign will be supported through social media, radio and press activity, helping to reach audiences including parents and carers of children and young people (aged 5 to 18) and young people (aged 13 to 18).

Starting Well Partnership in Worcestershire  

Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, Action for Children, Barnardo’s and Redditch Borough Council were delighted to formally launch the new Starting Well Partnership from 1st April 2020. Please take time to look at the website www.startingwellworcs.nhs.uk as this service is a key part of the early intervention and prevention offer in Worcestershire.

The partnership will enhance the support available to children, young people and families across the county, providing help during antenatal, post birth, and early years stages, and right throughout school life. Due to the current Coronavirus epidemic, the service will not be fully operational at this time, but will include Family Hubs in each of our local districts, and will offer family and parenting groups supporting all aspects of physical and mental wellbeing for children, young people and their families.

They will also work closely with schools and other community groups supporting young people and parents. The new offer includes a new Starting Well website which they are pleased to say is now live. It will be developed more over the coming months, but initially includes lots if information to support families during the current challenges as a result of Covid-19. There are also links to wider information on a range of issues, from infant feeding through to supporting a young person’s mental wellbeing.

Here2Help – support when you need it most

Here2Help is here for families self-isolating and unable to get support from friends, family or neighbours.

On the Here2Help website families can find resources to help with staying at home during Coronavirus as well as an online form they can fill out to request the support they need.

If the family does not have internet access, they can call 01905 768053 which is open Monday to Thursday, 9am – 5pm and Friday 9am – 4.30pm.

Here2Help will signpost callers to up to date advice and arrange volunteer support where required to help those who are unable to leave their homes as a result of needing to self-isolate.

The types of support available include:

  • Collecting and delivering food and supplies
  • Arranging emergency food support

  • Help with other commitments such as pet needs
  • Support for those who are feeling isolated
  • Advice around money, benefits and debt

Families First

Practical and emotional support for families in Worcestershire with a parent in prison or about to be sentenced.

Launched by YSS at the end of 2020, Families First supports children and families from the point of arrest through to prison release, helping to reduce the emotional turmoil and anguish experienced by so many children and families across the county.

Home Start

Home-Start Wyre Forest is open for business and able to accept referrals for families with children aged 0-18 years, living in The Wyre Forest, who may need some emotional support and befriending.

At present our volunteers are offering weekly support through phone and video calls, but this will return to face to face weekly visits to the home when safe to do so.

Home-Starts Psychology Service, Safe & Strong, continues to deliver therapy to adults and children who they support each week – again this is remote therapy from their Psychologist at present with a return to face to face sessions when guidance allows.

Pre-School and After School Family Groups will restart next year when it is safe to do so and run both term time and school holidays.

Families can contact Home Start directly, or school refer on their behalf, providing consent is given.

KOOTH  

Kooth is a free, web based, confidential support service funded by the Worcester and Hereford NHS Trust and is available to all young people aged 11-18 years. Kooth provides a safe and secure means of accessing mental health and wellbeing support designed specifically for young people.

Year 6 pupils transition into High Schools and as well as it being an exciting time, it may also cause anxiety and stress in others. Kooth can also support vulnerable young people who may experience isolation or low self-esteem and help build their resilience for the big changes ahead. During such unprecedented times, lots of young people are also seeking support around not seeing their friends/teachers before moving to high school, and not being able to see their wider family.

Kooth offers young people the opportunity to have a text-based conversation with a qualified counsellor. Counsellors are available from 12noon to 10pm on weekdays and 6pm to 10 pm at weekends, every day of the year on a drop-in basis. Young people can access regular booked online counselling sessions as needed. Outside counselling hours’ young people can message our team and get support by the next day.

When young people register with Kooth they will have support available to them now and in the future. Support can be gained not only through counselling but articles, forums and discussion boards. All content is age appropriate, clinically approved and fully moderated.

Key public health messages around Covid-19

Worcestershire County Council and Worcestershire Children First have produced a short film aimed at primary aged school children to help pupils understand the key public health messages around Covid-19 and hopefully offer some reassurance.

The ‘Hands. Face. Space.’ campaign urges everyone to continue to wash their hands, cover their face and make space to control infection rates. The NHS has released a video that communicates the importance of wearing a face covering on transport directly to children and young people.

Parent Teacher Association

Here at Hartlebury Church of England (Voluntary Controlled) Primary School we have a thriving and dedicated Parent Teacher Association. Our PTA organise school fetes, our annual bonfire celebrations, bake sales, Ice Pop Fridays, BBQs and so much more. Their help and support has allowed the school to fund laptops, iPads, a pond-dipping station and state-of-the-art interactive whiteboards, to name just a few.

The PTA are always looking for more support from new parents and carers and for new ideas.

There are three ways that you can become involved in the PTA:

Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools for children of statutory school age from low-income families who are known to be eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) in both mainstream and non-mainstream settings; to children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months and to children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces. The allocation will include pupils eligible for FSM at any point in the last six years (known as the Ever 6 FSM measure).

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit. However, we will be held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families. From September 2012 we have been required to publish online information about how we have used the Premium. This will ensure that parents, and others, are made fully aware of the attainment and progress of pupils covered by the Premium and the extra support that they receive.

Music Lessons

For this term, Severn Arts are able to accept applications directly from parents/carers for online music lessons. Parents/carers will need to pay for the lessons at the point of booking and no lessons will be able to take place until payment has been received. Parents would therefore deal directly with Severn Arts.

Severn Arts have also provided us with a series of 10-minute body percussion videos that we would like to share with you. The videos have been funded by West Midlands Music but are FREE for you to use with your children. Body percussion has become particularly popular during lockdown as it is a brilliant way to learn fundamental musical concepts including rhythm, beat and tempo without an instrument.

As the Severn Academies Educational Trust we believe that regular attendance is vital. All schools within our Trust use the Application for Leave of Absence Form above. Each request will be reviewed using the information provided and a decision will be sent to you in writing.

Holidays During Term-time

As a parent/carer, you can demonstrate your commitment to your child’s education by taking your holidays during school holidays.

The Facts

We recognise that it is often expensive to take a holiday during school breaks and that is why some parents/carers may ask for term-time leave for their child. However, it is important that parents/carers carefully consider the implications of taking their child out of school during term time.

Research suggests that children who are taken out of school may never catch up on the coursework they have missed. This may affect test results and can be particularly harmful if the child is studying for final year examinations.

Children who struggle with English or Mathematics may also find it even harder to cope when they return to school, while younger children may find it difficult to renew friendships with their classmates.

Things to Consider:
There are times during a school year when a child may experience particular problems because of term-time leave such as:

  • Closeness to examinations or tests;
  • During GCSE and other examination courses;
  • During the first year at a new school;
  • At the beginning of a new school term.

If the school refuses a request for term-time leave and the child is still taken out of school, then the absence will be recorded as an ‘unauthorised absence’.

The Law

The law does not say that parents/carers have an automatic right to take their child out of school for holidays. It states that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term-time unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Holiday prices and the fact that the parents/carers have booked before checking with the school are not ‘exceptional’ reasons.

If the child is away from school for a total of four weeks or more, the school may have to take the child ‘off roll’ unless there is a good reason for the continued absence, such as illness. In these circumstances it is up to the parent/carer to inform the school, as once removed from ‘roll’ there is no guarantee that the child will regain a place at the school.

In line with Worcestershire County Council Policy, an ‘unauthorised absence’ may be subject to a penalty notice fine of £60 payable per parent/carer per child, increasing to £120 each if not paid within 21 days. If this fine is not paid within 28 days this may lead to court proceedings.

Other absence from school will be authorised if it is for the following reasons:

  • Genuine illness;
  • Unavoidable medical/dental appointments (however try to make these after school if at all possible);
  • Days of religious observance;
  • Exceptional circumstances, such as bereavement;
  • Seeing a parent/carer who is on leave from the armed forces;
  • External examinations.

Other absence from school will not be authorised:

  • For any type of shopping;
  • Looking after brothers, sisters or unwell parents/carers;
  • Minding the house;
  • Birthdays;
  • Resting after a late night;
  • Relatives visiting or visiting relatives.
Every day is important. Please help your child not to miss any of this valuable time. We hope that when you have read this information you will consider that your child’s education is too important to take holidays during term time.

ParentPay – our new online payment service

We are pleased to announce that all SAET schools will be accepting payments online for items such as dinner money, school trips and wrap around care. Using a secure website called ParentPay you will be able to pay online using your credit or debit card or continue to make cash payments at PayPoint stores. ParentPay is our preferred method of making payments to school.

Data Protection
We share data with ParentPay such as pupil name, age, year group, dietary information and key contacts. The system also holds information provided by ‘Payers’ at the point of activation. SAET’s lawful base for processing is that of performing a task carried out in the public interest.

You can help us reduce workloads for all staff, creating more time to lend to educational support and the smooth running of the school.
