The National Curriculum

The National Curriculum is the framework by which we teach and learn. It sets out the programmes of study and attainment targets for all subjects at all Key Stages. The Key Objectives are set out for us to develop children’s learning and ensure progression. In this area we aim to keep parents and carers informed of the children’s Key Objectives for learning, so that you are able to support your child and have an understanding of how the teaching and learning process is structured.

The teaching of Phonics to our youngest children follows the Department for Education validated programme Twinkle Phonics. Families of Early Years children and Key Stage 1, will be invited to an annual phonics parent’s workshop. Please look out for further details throughout the academic year.

Literacy

History

At Hartlebury, we ignite a passion for the past in our children as they explore the fascinating history of our country and the wider world. Our children learn that history is a story of people, communities, and their connections. By examining evidence, they develop critical thinking skills, forming their own opinions and judgements. Geography

At Hartlebury, we provide our children with exciting opportunities to develop an understanding of diverse societies and cultures across the world. Physical Education

Music

At Hartlebury, we are passionate about music and believe it unlocks a unique form of creativity. Through a rich and engaging musical education, we are confident that children will grow in self-confidence, creativity, and achieve a strong sense of success.

Foreign Languages

At Hartlebury, the Key Stage 2 French curriculum is designed to provide an engaging introduction to the language and culture. Pupils will develop foundational communication skills, learning to understand and use basic vocabulary and grammatical structures related to everyday topics. This includes French greetings, numbers, food items, school, sports and hobbies, fostering an understanding of personal interests in another language. Through interactive activities and a focus on practical communication, pupils build confidence and develop a positive attitude towards language learning, laying the groundwork for future linguistic exploration.

Religious Education

At Hartlebury, our R.E. curriculum follows the local authority agreed syllabus. As a Church of England school, the principles and values of Christianity are central to our teaching and woven throughout our curriculum. We believe it's important for children to learn about Christianity, as well as other major world religions, including Islam, Judaism, and Hinduism. Through R.E., we encourage and aim to help children understand the nature of religion, its beliefs, and practices, while also nurturing their spirituality and sense of friendship and community.

A Broad & Balanced Curriculum
