Traditional Tales Day

On the 11th April, Early Years had a “Traditional Tales” day to end their Traditional Tales topic, which the children have enjoyed so much. On the day, we all came into school dressed as our favourite character from a traditional tale, and there were some very impressive and creative costumes!

During the day, we engaged in lots of traditional tales activities including storytelling, traditional tale role play, messy play, building houses for the three pigs (with real sticks, straw and bricks), engaging with our story boxes, putting on puppet shows, making chocolate nests for the golden goose and so much more. At 2 o’clock, we all went to the hall and put on a traditional tales show for our families and friends. We sang songs and performed our very own traditional tale “Goldilocks and the 3 Penguins, which the children wrote themselves. After our performance, we had a really lovely afternoon in the classroom with our families, sharing our traditional tales books and having some mindfulness time to sit and colour pictures of traditional tales characters. Colouring is such an important activity for young children as it develops hand strength, pencil grip, pencil control, patience, resilience, understanding of colour, vocabulary and knowledge of the world and so much more. It is also a great way to encourage children to take some calm time to stop and be more relaxed and still (away from the bright colours and immediate feedback given by tablets, games consoles and iPads) and is a lovely time for families to spend together, relaxing, talking, discussing and developing children’s vocabulary and social skills. Miss Bagnall can bang on for hours about the benefits of colouring and it was great to see children, and parents, so engaged with such a simple but important activity, with some truly beautiful pictures being created!
